Gouache is a terrific medium to learn to paint with even if you are an absolute beginner.
Being a water based medium Gouache is easy to use and can be quickly mastered. It dries fast and the dry layers can be easily re-hydrated if needed. It's also an opaque medium which means you can build up layers easily with each layer only taking a few minutes to dry.
Its a highly portable medium as well. You don't need lots of fancy equipment or mediums and solvents. All you need is a good sketch book, a few tubes of paint, a selection of brushes and some water and you are good to go.
All of which makes Gouache the ideal medium for painting at home, or on location, and even travelling or while on holidays.

We begin by exploring the paints, brushes, palettes and painting surfaces we need as a minimum.

We take a look at how to work with Gouache and use it to best effect. We explore several different ways of thinning the paint down and reducing the values, and we complete a simple colour chart to get to know how our paints can be mixed together.

Demonstration 1 - Still Life
The first full painting demonstration is of a simple still life. The purpose of this demonstration is to get us used to using Gouache paint and understanding how to apply layers to build up the painting.
Demonstration 2 - Landscape
Our second full painting demonstration is of a landscape scene with a view towards Mt Warning. This is a great painting to try as you will learn how to use Gouache to create a sense of depth utilising principles of Aerial Perspective
